Services > Portals
Meaning of portal has changed from what it used to be in late 20th century. At that time “intranet” would refer to network within an organisation. The question now is what is an "intranet" nowadays? An intranet is service making use of the technologies of the World Wide Web (usually HTML over HTTP) to distribute information within a single organisation over it is internal network. Note that the intranet is no longer the network itself, but a service run over it.
Technically speaking, an 'intranet' is a private computer network that uses Internet protocols and network connectivity to securely share part of an organisation's information or operations with its employees. Briefly, an intranet can be understood as "a private version of an Internet," or as a version of the Internet confined to an organization.
So, a company might now have three types of information service:
(1) Its intranet, for internal information for its staff,
(2) An extranet, for information available to a select few external bodies, and
(3) its World Wide Web site, for public information.
